Petrol Ofisi accelerated its sustainable aviation investments

Petrol Ofisi, Turkey's energy infrastructure group, is increasing its investments in sustainable aviation. By supplying SAF, the world's leading sustainable aviation fuel, to the Turkish market from 2022, Petrol Ofisi is strengthening its ongoing cooperation with Pegasus Airlines in this field. With the new protocol, the volume of SAF supplied by Petrol Ofisi to Pegasus Airlines is expected to increase threefold in 2023 and up to tenfold in 2024.

Turkish energy infrastructure group Petrol Ofisi has accelerated its investments in sustainable aviation. Since March 2022, Petrol Ofisi has been supplying Neste MY Sustainable Aviation FuelTM (SAF), a sustainable aviation fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%, to the aircraft operated by Pegasus Airlines. With the newly signed protocol, Petrol Ofisi aims to triple the volume of SAF supplied to Pegasus Airlines from Izmir Adnan Menderes and Ankara Esenboga airports in 2023 and increase it up to 10 times in 2024. Produced from 100% renewable waste and waste feedstock such as edible oil and animal fat waste, SAF can be used in aircraft engines or fuel infrastructure without any modifications.

"We invest in sustainable tomorrow"

Commenting on the protocol, Petrol Ofisi Group CEO Mehmet Abbasoglu said, "As Petrol Ofisi Group, we continue our investments and collaborations that will pioneer the sectors in which we operate and provide real added value to the future of the national economy without slowing down. I am proud to say that Petrol Ofisi Group is one of the most important drivers of aviation in Turkey and the region. In the aviation sector, where we have been providing services for more than half a century, we provide fueling services at 72 airports in Turkey under our PO Air brand and provide services to more than 250 airlines worldwide, servicing more than a quarter of a million aircraft annually. This huge operation is a compelling reason for us to take steps for the benefit and future of our industry and our stakeholders. We are therefore very pleased to strengthen and continue this cooperation with Pegasus Airlines, which we believe is vital to the aviation industry, and to invest in a sustainable future.”

Speaking about the collaboration, Guliz Ozturk, CEO of Pegasus Airlines, said: "As Pegasus Airlines, we continue our efforts to support sustainable aviation in line with the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) 'Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050' decision. In order to achieve this goal, it is of great importance to increase the use of SAF produced from environmentally friendly and sustainable sources with low carbon emissions. We have decided to strengthen and continue our cooperation with Petrol Ofisi, which has been refueling our aircraft with SAF since March 2022. We aim to expand our cooperation geographically in Turkey in the next two years. We will continue to work with all our strength to support sustainable aviation".

Prioritizing sustainable aviation in line with the "Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050" target of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), of which it is a member, Petrol Ofisi first indirectly supplied SAF fuel from Neste, a world leader in renewable fuels and circular solutions, to Pegasus Airlines flying from Izmir to Sabiha Gokcen in March 2022. Petrol Ofisi took its cooperation with Neste one step further in June and November last year, this time with direct deliveries from Neste, and continues to provide added value to the sector by increasing SAF supply from Izmir Adnan Menderes and Ankara Esenboga airports.

Jonathan Wood, Vice President Renewable Aviation at Neste, said: "At Neste, we are committed to helping the aviation industry achieve its ambitious goals of reducing emissions. Collaborations with partners in the refueling chain are critical to this end. We are delighted to be working together with Petrol Ofisi and through this strategic partnership we look forward to increasing the supply of our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel to airports and airlines in Turkey. Thanks to the ongoing investments in our refineries in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and Singapore, we will increase SAF production capacity 15 times by the end of 2023."
